Submit A Book Proposal

Q: How many chapters can I author as an editor of a book?

A: An Editor may not author more than two chapters for their own publication.

Q: Can all my contributors be from the same country or university?

A: Contributors should not all be from one country or one university. eContent Pro International Press publications must contain a global perspective and a diverse group of authors. Listservs, academic databases, and online searches for professional organizations related to your book's topic are just a few ways to accomplish this.

Q: What frontmatter is required for publication?

A: The preface and the Table of Contents are the only two pieces of frontmatter that are required.

Q: Am I responsible for creating an index or a compilation of references?

A: Editors do not need to create an index or a compilation of references. Our production team will create these components for the publication.

Q: Can I author a foreword for my publication?

A: Editors may not author a foreword for their own publication. The foreword must be written by someone who is not the editor or a contributing author.

Q: Can I upload chapters on behalf of the contributors?

A: The editor should not upload chapters on behalf of their authors. The editor's information will be tied to the chapter submission, which may cause a lot of confusion for you and your authors. Additionally, to ensure that chapter contributors receive proofs of their work during the production phase and their complimentary content upon publication, we must have their contact details entered within the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system. Also, it is important that the corresponding author signs the Author's Warranty and License Agreement to confirm originality of the work.

Q: May I serve as a reviewer in the double-anonymized peer review process?

A: Editors may not, under any circumstances, serve as reviewers for the double-anonymized peer review process. Reviews must be completed by chapter authors or the Editorial Advisory Board members.

Q: Why do I need to submit a bio?

A: The editor's bio will be present in the "about the contributors" section of the book. The editor's bio will also be displayed on the webpage for the book. Editor bios are commonly used for promotional purposes during the marketing phase of your book as it makes your publication and you, the researcher, more visible to libraries and other potential venues.

Q: Do all contributing authors need to sign the Author's Warranty and License Agreement?

A: The corresponding author can sign on behalf of all authors on the chapter (so long as they are authorized to do so). However, all authors are welcome to sign this document.

Q: How many chapters can I contribute to a single publication and how long should they be?

A: Contributing authors should not submit or participate in writing more than 2 chapters for a single publication. Chapters should follow the lengths outlined in the submission guidelines, but typically should be no shorter than 10,000 words (references and related readings may be included in this word count).

Q: How do I upload a full chapter to the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system?

A: Authors receive a notification email when their chapter proposal is approved which will include a submission link. This chapter submission link takes authors to a five-step process: Chapter Info, Authors, Documents, Figures, and Review & Submit. Authors will upload their chapter in the third step, Documents, but need to complete each page in order to successfully submit.

Q: How do I upload a chapter revision to the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system?

A: The corresponding author can upload their revised document on behalf of the contributing authors of the chapter by accessing their chapter in the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system. Once their chapter listing is showing, authors can upload their revisions by going to the "Documents" page, selecting "File," choosing the correcting document, and selecting "Upload." This will successfully upload their revised chapter document.

Q: Why do I need in-text citations?

A: When an author uses information from an outside source (article, book, chapter, webpage, etc.) in their chapter, an in-text citation must be used to inform their reader that the information came from another source.

Q: May I use bracketed references or footnotes instead of in-text citations?

A: Bracketed references, footnotes, and endnotes may not be used instead of in-text citations. eContent Pro International Press requires that all references (in-text and full references) be in APA Style. Any references that are not in APA Style will be returned to the author(s) for correction.

Q: For a mathematics-based chapter, what should I use to format the equations?

A: All equations must be formatted using MathType or must be typed out manually by the authors. We cannot accept mathematical material that has been embedded as an image or formatted using Equation Editor.

Q: What is the difference between a book author and a contributing author?

A: A contributing author is only contributing a single chapter to a publication. A book author is an author that writes an entire book.

Q: Why is it important for me and my co-authors to submit our bios?

A: All bios will be displayed in the “About the Contributors” section of the publication. If you do not submit your bio, your name will not appear on this list.

Q: Why are authors requested to sign an Author's Warranty and License Agreement?

A: To publish their chapters, corresponding authors must agree to an Author’s Warranty and License Agreement. Rather than transferring copyright, this agreement typically confirms that the work is original, free of infringement, and that the authors grant eContent Pro International Press a non-exclusive license to publish the chapter. Authors retain copyright to their work and publish it under a Creative Commons license, allowing free access and sharing under specified terms. This means authors can reuse their content (such as ideas and text) elsewhere, subject to the terms of the license. eContent Pro also supports fair use: authors may post the final typeset PDF of their individual chapter (not the entire book) on their secure personal websites or institutional repositories.

Q: Where do I sign the Author's Warranty and License Agreement?

A: The corresponding author of the chapter can electronically agree to the Author's Warranty and License Agreement in the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system when they first create the chapter listing. They can also go back into the "Authors" section of their chapter listing later in development to electronically sign this document.

Q: Can I publish my thesis or dissertation as a chapter?

A: You may use the idea behind your thesis or dissertation for your chapter, but it must be updated and expanded upon. You may not submit your thesis or dissertation verbatim.

Q: Can I submit a chapter that has already been published elsewhere?

A: eContent Pro International Press does not accept any content that has been submitted for publication or previously published elsewhere. All chapters must be original content.

Q: What is an "image permission form" and when do I need to use one?

A: If an image is copyrighted, you will need to obtain permission from the copyright holder in order to publish the image in your chapter.

Q: How can I tell if an image is copyrighted?

A: You can often tell if an image is copyrighted if the copyright symbol © and the name of the company are present on the image. Disney characters, National Geographic photographs, logos, etc. are copyrighted.

Q: Who do I ask for permission to use the image?

A: You will need to contact the copyright holder to obtain permission. You can often find out through the company’s website who to contact and what you need to do to obtain permission.

Q: What happens if I cannot get permission?

A: If you cannot get permission, you can create a figure or image that presents the information you need in a different way. If you need to include the name of a company, type out the name instead of using their logo. If logos or copyrighted content is present in an image and they aren’t important, our production team will blur or crop out the content that is copyrighted to avoid any possible infringements.

Q: What is a “case permission form” and when do I need to use one?

A: A case permission form is required when an author is conducting a case study of an organization or institution. Permission must be granted in order for the author to use the name of the organization/institution in their chapter.

Q: What happens if permission is not granted?

A: If you cannot obtain permission and you believe that the integrity of the chapter is lost without it, you may request that your chapter be removed from the publication. Or, you may change the name of the organization/institution to anonymize it. You may add a note to your chapter’s acknowledgment stating that you’ve changed the name of the organization/institution for anonymity.

Q: What is an “interview release form” and when do I need to use one?

A: The interviewee (person being interviewed) needs to sign the agreement stating that the interview they’ve given the author to use is original and hasn't been published before, and also that they give their consent to utilize it.

Q: What happens if I cannot get permission?

A: The interview will not be considered publishable unless the form is signed, dated, and returned to eContent Pro International Press. The interview will not be usable without this form. If you are unable to obtain permission to use the interview for any reason, you will need to either restructure your chapter to ensure that it makes sense without the interview, or you may request that your chapter be removed from the publication.

Q: How long does my book have to be?

A: Your book must have a minimum of 7 chapters and 70,000 words.

Q: May I recruit authors to contribute chapters to the book?

A: For authored book publications, only individuals listed as authors on the book's contract may submit chapters to the book. No outside contributions should be recruited for the work. You may incorporate interviews that took place between you and other individuals (ensuring that an “interview release form” is signed off on), however, that is the only contribution that should be coming from any outside parties.

Q: How do I upload my chapters in the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system?

A: You can upload your chapters individually by first accessing your book in the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system under the “Current Projects” dropdown menu and then selecting the “Upload Chapters” option under your book’s title. You’ll be able to upload your chapters individually by adding the chapter’s number, its title, a subtitle (if necessary), the chapter’s abstract, and then uploading the document. Once uploaded, the page will refresh and allow you to repeat the process until you have uploaded all of your chapters.

Q: How do I upload chapter revisions in the eEditorial Discovery® online submission management system?

A: You can upload any chapter revisions as if you are doing the initial chapter uploads by selecting “Upload Chapters” under your book’s title. The following page will show all of your chapters’ numbers and titles. To upload revisions, select “edit” next to the corresponding chapter title, then browse to choose your revised file. Finally, select “Save” to save your revision.

Q: For a mathematics-based chapter, what should I use to format the equations?

A: All equations must be formatted using MathType or must be typed out manually by the authors. We cannot accept mathematical material that has been embedded as an image or formatted using Equation Editor.
